TEATRO DEGLI ANIMOSI

WHY SEE?

A historic theater that tells centuries of culture and performance.

CURIOSITY

The Teatro degli Animosi was built in 1792 at the behest of the Accademia degli Animosi, a group of local nobles passionate about art and culture. Likely designed by the same architect as the Teatro Niccolini in Florence, it was constructed in Doric-Tuscan style by the Mughini Company of Como. Completed in 1806, it was immediately equipped with an innovative hot air heating system.

In 1892, for its centenary, a plaque bearing the names of the founders was installed, still visible in the foyer today. At the beginning of the 20th century, the theater underwent significant renovations: the roof was reinforced, a new winch was installed for the central chandelier, and the ceiling was decorated with a hot air balloon—symbol of the Accademia—accompanied by the motto “Tutte le vie sono piane agli Animosi” (“All paths are smooth for the Animosi”). Engineer Lorenzo Fabbri, the creator of the local hydroelectric plant, designed and installed the electric lighting system free of charge.

In 1938, following the dissolution of the Accademia, the building was purchased by the Dopolavoro Ferroviario (Railway Workers’ Recreational Club). During World War II, bombings damaged the façade and the stalls. After temporary repairs, the theater remained in use until 1970, when it was declared unsafe. Purchased by the municipality, it was restored over twenty years and reopened with high-level theatrical seasons. In 1997, the front section was rebuilt to include a ticket office and cloakroom. Today, the Teatro degli Animosi continues to host performances and cultural events, preserving its charm with 80 seats, 33 boxes on three levels, and the evocative central stage.
